New eBook Releases: SALEM HEALTH

Focus on Global Religions

On April 11, Dr. Anna Bigelow offered the VGCC educational community a presentation entitled "Religion and the Arab Spring" in which she addressed the role of religion in the current Middle East uprisings commonly referred to as the "Arab Spring."  Dr. Bigelow is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NC State University.

The VGCC LRC offers the opportunity to continue the discussion by providing a wide variety of print and electronic resources covering global religions and the Middle East.  On our website, this month's Featured Authors & Works showcases Dr. Bigelow and several works covering these topics.  In addition, our highly regarded Gale database Global Issues IN CONTEXT provides current information on Syrian Civil Unrest and Arab Spring and other related topics. 

Great Women...Great Authors

In celebration of Women's History Month, our Featured Authors & Works Page is featuring the writings of women authors from Katherine Boo's powerful behind the beautiful forevers to S.E. (Susan Eloise) Hinton's YA landmark work The Outsiders.  

"A picture is worth a thousand words"

Do you have a paper or project that could be enhanced with just the right photos or graphics?  Our students and faculty have access to AP Images (Associated Press) in the LRC Website Databases / eResources Page.  With over 4.6 million photographs dating back to 1826 and as current as a few moments ago. Tens of thousands of graphics, more than 4,500 hours of audio files dating from the 1920’s, and news stories and headlines dating from 1997.  Just download items to your computer and then you are free to paste them into any class assignment.

We Roar Into March With Great Numbers!

Oops...sorry, with all this nice weather we thought February was being skipped this year.  But, the spring semester here at VGCC is underway and our LRC has been packed with students working on anatomy, math, science, nursing, and more.  Maybe a few are checking their Facebook pages -- but that's OK -- we LIKE our Vance-Granville CC LRCs/Libraries page and our Twitter feed @ VGCC_LRC.  Plus, we have SO many new and exciting books rolling in every week.

LRC Supports MLK Celebration & Black History Month

The LRC and our Library Services staff showed their support for VGCC's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and the upcoming Black History Month by creating a display of books and DVDs related to these events.  Recent additions to our collection include The Black History of the White House by Clarence Lusane (2011), Keep On Pushing: Black Power Music From Blues to Hip-Hop by Denise Sullivan (2011), and the DVD Freedom Riders (2011).

Just in time for our students looking to move on to a four-year college or university, we have the brand new edition of The College Blue Book available as an eBook within the GVRL (Gale Virtual Reference Library).  The GVRL (and its exciting new interface) and be accessed both on-campus and remotely from our Databases / eResources Page.
